Dr Tshepiso Choma

"Growing up as a young woman in a resource-constrained township, I dreamed of helping to make the highest standards of medical care and innovation accessible to all. The African principle of caring for one another has become the foundation of my philosophy as I support patients and their families through the challenges of a cancer diagnosis."

Dr Tshepiso Choma is a Radiation Oncologist committed to delivering evidence-based, patient-centred cancer care. Her passion for improving access to high-quality healthcare and innovative cancer treatments is rooted in her upbringing and continues to shape her approach to medicine today.

She obtained her MBChB degree from the University of Pretoria in 2014 and developed a strong interest in oncology through her clinical work and dedication to improving cancer outcomes in South Africa.

From 2018 to 2019, Dr Choma served as a Medical Officer in Medical Oncology at Steve Biko Academic Hospital. During this period, her contributions to healthcare and professional achievements were recognised nationally when she was featured in the 2019 edition of Mail & Guardian's Women Changing South Africa publication.

In 2020, she commenced specialist training in Radiation Oncology at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and qualified as a Radiation Oncologist in 2024. Alongside her specialist training, she completed a Master's degree through University of the Witwatersrand. Her research focused on the implementation of ultra-hypofractionated radiotherapy for breast cancer, reflecting her commitment to advancing innovative treatment approaches that improve patient convenience, access to care, and clinical outcomes.

In recognition of her academic achievements and clinical interests, Dr Choma was selected for a Visiting Fellowship at University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia in June 2025. This opportunity allowed her to collaborate with leading international oncology experts and further develop her expertise in contemporary radiation oncology practices and emerging treatment strategies.

Dr Choma's clinical interests include breast, gastrointestinal, and genitourinary malignancies. She is dedicated to combining the latest advances in oncology with compassionate, individualised care, ensuring that each patient receives treatment that is both clinically excellent and aligned with their personal needs and goals.

Her approach to medicine is guided by the belief that innovation and compassion must work hand in hand. Through this philosophy, she strives to help patients and their families navigate the cancer journey with confidence, dignity, and hope.
